The Pakistan Stock Exchange was established on 18 September 1947 and was formally incorporated by guarantee on 10 March 1949 as a company limited by the name of 'Karachi Stock Exchange'. In October 1970, a second stock exchange was established in Lahore to cater to the stock trading needs of the provincial city. The Islamabad Stock Exchange was established in October 1989 to cater to investors from the northern parts of the country. As the three exchanges had separate management, trading interfaces, indexes and no mutual structure, the Government of Pakistan enacted the Stock Exchanges (Corporatization, Demutualization and Integration) Act 2012, which resulted in the three exchanges having their own. Operations were coordinated. Under the new name 'Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited' (PSX) with effect from 11 January 2016

The PSX has made significant progress in its history, initially having a small presence of 5 listed companies with a total paid-up capital of Rs 37 million. In 1960 there were 81 companies with a market capitalization of Rs 1.8 billion whereas now there are 531* (+2 GEM Board) companies with a market capitalization of Rs 7.68 trillion. Listed companies are divided into 36 industry sectors/groups.
