The Bureau of Statistics (BOS), Government of Punjab, is the center of statistical data activities in the province and is responsible for the collection, processing and dissemination of statistical data through publications and electronic media from time to time. Bureau of Statistics (BOS) Punjab is an attached department of Planning and Development Department, Government of Punjab. The functions of BOS, Punjab, standardized by the National Statistical Council, are to collect data at the provincial level, coordinate and support statistical activities across the province, coordinate with the federal statistical system, and compile and disseminate provincial indices by collecting information. Institutional sources as well as by conducting fresh census/surveys. BOS, Punjab has Head Office at Lahore, 9 Divisional and 7 District Field Offices across the province.

Pakistan inherited a decentralized statistical system at independence in 1947, which produced data primarily as a by-product of the administrative functions of the government. It consisted of statistical cells varying in strength, technical competence and expertise in various government departments with no agency to coordinate their activities. Realizing the shortcomings of the system, the Government of Pakistan, on the recommendations of the Statistical Reorganization Committee, created a department in 1950 as an attached department of the Economic Affairs Division to coordinate the country's statistical activities and cater to its growing population.
